One of the great things about being in the travel business is that we get to travel, and not just to tropical clothing optional resorts.  We also get to visit lifestyle and swingers clubs around the country, and last week we were able to visit New Horizons, a club located just north of Seattle, Washington and one of the oldest clubs in America.  Now as clubs go, there are lots of clubs that we would recommend you visit, if you happen to be in the area.  But New Horizons is different—this is a club worthy of traveling to, even if you have no other reason to visit the Pacific Northwest.

Arriving at New Horizons is like going to another world.  It’s not located in an industrial park or some seedy part of town.  It sits on a park-like estate.  Think of a huge ski lodge nestled amongst towering cedar, hemlock and fir trees and surrounded b y lush gardens, walkways and fish ponds.  Now you’re getting the idea.

When you walk in the front door you just know you’re in for something special.  The building is cavernous—big enough to handle three to four hundred couples on a busy weekend.  But rather than one big hall, it’s divided into different sections on a variety of levels, all surrounding a gigantic dance floor, resulting in it being much larger than it appears.  The interior is done entirely in wood and stone, and it looks much like those big ski chalets you see in Colorado and Utah.

Things get started early at New Horizons because this club serves dinner.  We dined buffet style on pasta, salads, chicken, buns and desert.   After dinner and some socializing Wasser, the club emcee and entertainment director got the crowd going by honoring new members and people celebrating birthdays.  The night we attended Wasser orchestrated the sexy shoe contest and about twenty ladies, accompanied  by 40 sexy legs and beautifully manicured feet got up to show off their fancy footwear.  It was a tough decision but a long time club member, Don, narrowed the field down to three lucky ladies who walked away with Dream Pleasure Tours travel certificates.

Wasser then turned the floor over to the live band (that’s right—no DJ but an actual five member band!) and within minutes the dance floor was packed with people getting down and getting sexy.  One of the great things about this club is that it was designed for holding events, so when the emcee is at the mike, everyone can see and hear what’s going on.  The music was loud enough to dance to, but the acoustics of the building allow for people to be able to converse without shouting their heads off.

But the action doesn’t stop on the dance floor.  We noticed a lot of people heading towards the rear of the building, and following, we discovered one of the best reason’s for going to New Horizons—the play areas!  The first stop was to the changing rooms—lockers , showers and restroom facilities that would make a lot of health clubs envious.  Spacious and spotless.

Then down the corridor past the Jacuzzi to a series of rooms designed for fun.   Each room had its own special theme (I can’t remember them all) but what we liked was that they were not just rooms with a couple of mattresses thrown down.  From the lighting, to the paint on the walls, to sheets on the bed, to the color of the cushions and couches these room were designed by someone with an artistic flair, and again, everything was spotless and set up with all of the necessities for playing and having fun.

There’s another interesting twist at New Horizons.  They have a couple of rooms where you can “rent” a foam mattress and roll out your sleeping bag so when you’re tired of partying and playing, no need to drive.  Stay the night and head off in the morning.  This feature is particularly convenient for those who travel a distance to attend the club.

We’re we impressed with New Horizons?  No—we we’re blown away.  Of course we want you to travel to those great clothing optional resorts we represent, but please, find yourself the time to visit the Pacific Northwest, spend a couple of days in Seattle ( twenty minutes away) and Vancouver (only a couple of hours away and one of the best cities in the world) and of course, visit New Horizons.  But check the club’s schedule before you go—sometimes the club is closed for private events.  To find out more about New Horizons, click here.

One of the best jobs we have is checking out new resorts.  When I say new, I mean to new to us.  We pride ourselves on intimately knowing the resorts we sell.  We’ve been to our resorts, we’ve partied at our resorts, we know the staff at our resorts and we know the management and in many cases the owners of our resorts.  That’s how we’re able to better represent our customers to make sure the resort experience is everything you want it to.

So we were very excited at having the opportunity to visit Sea Mountain Inn in Desert Hot Springs, California.  Desert Hot Springs is a small community located on the east side of the Coachella Valley in the foothills of the Joshua Tree National Monument, and is just minutes by car from world-famous and word-class Palm Springs, and about two hours drive from downtown Los Angeles.  Desert Hot Springs sits atop two aquifers, one delivering the world’s finest natural hot mineral water and the other provides the best naturally tasting award-winning municipal drinking water.

Sea Mountain Inn is just a couple of blocks from where the main road in Desert Hot Springs disappears into the Santa Rosa mountains.  By resort standards, it is small—with only 15 rooms.  But its size, and the personalized service and vision of its owner, Dewey, make it a very unique resort experience.  From the outside you would never believe the oasis that awaits within.  The fifteen rooms envelope an inner courtyard of pools, waterfalls, palm trees, walkways, tropical foliage, and artifacts from Bali, Thailand and other exotic ports of call.  We were impressed by both the cleanliness as well as the pleasing layout.  Of course, the southern California desert climate doesn’t hurt.  Sunny days, virtually no humidity, and cooler desert nights.

The rooms can only be described as first class. Flat screen TVs, DVD players, king size super plush beds, down duvets, Egyptian linen, ancient and designer artwork, robes, small refrigerator, and coffee maker in every room.   These rooms rival those I’ve stayed in at Five Star hotels.  The waterfall shower heads even feature the Desert Hot Springs famous mineral water.   The price includes a basic breakfast, lunch and a basic selection of booze (beer and wine)—but you’re welcome to bring your own and consume it on premises.

But great rooms and fancy grounds do not a resort make.  There needs to be more—and Sea Mountain Inn delivers.  The resort is truly a paradise for those people who like a constraint free environment.  The resort is clothing optional and it certainly is designed for fun loving open minded people.   It is a playground that allows you to do what you want to do, when you want to do it.  No rules, no special areas, no behavior police.  There is a freedom at Sea Mountain Inn that frankly we’ve never experienced at any other resort.

Also, because Sea Mountain Inn issues day and evening passes, the number of couples (couples and single woman only!) increases substantially over the number of rooms.  Just a block away are two other more traditional resorts, and when Sea Mountain is full, many vacationers choose to stay down the street and visit for the fun and frolic through the day and evening.  And fun and frolic it is.  From the moment you arrive you know it’s different. As Dewey met us when we entered the property he was busy introducing us to other guests, making us feel welcome.  After getting out of our street cloth and relaxing by the pool, Dewey repeatedly made the rounds with special drink concoctions that tasted great and had my head spinning before too long.

A final kudos to Dewey and this one is personal.   Music played all day throughout the resort and late into the evening.  It wasn’t too loud, it wasn’t all one type of music, it varied throughout the day to set the mood, and it contained an eclectic mix of jazz, rock, pop, blues, R&B, electronica, and club music that really worked.   It was so refreshing after having been to many resorts and clubs where it seems some DJ corrals the sound system and in complete deference to the crowd or setting, plays his personal favorite music at the volume her or she chooses, to the great annoyance of most people listening.

We all have preferences for our email system.  There are a lot of them out there–gmail, hotmail, earthlink, yahoo, and many many others.  Typically who you use as an email provider would be of no consequence to us.  However, we have a problem with AOL.  What is that problem?  There are a number of problems. First, if you have an AOL email address, you many not get our newsletter emails.  We get many complaints from AOL customers that they don’t get our emails, even though they are on our email list (this even includes copies of invoices and other important travel documents).  It’s not that these emails go to the the junk folder, they seem to just disappear.

Second, even though every one on our email list has signed up to be on our email list, we got more spam reports from AOL than from anywhere else, by a huge multiple.  I don’t know how AOL manages its spam reporting.  It may be that their system somehow automatically assigns certain senders as being spam, or if there is one complaint, they ascribe the same complaint to multiple emails, but there is no way for us to find out how they do it, or to contact any one who does report us as spam, or even to contest the spam report–believe me we have tried.  The company that helps us send out our newsletter even suggested not bothering to send it to anyone with an AOL account.

Third, we now are having a problem with customers trying to send us emails.  I spoke with a customer yesterday who said he had sent us three or four emails, none of which we ever received.  He did some investigating and found that AOL was actually blocking delivery of emails to us for his account.

I get as annoyed by spam as most people, but I would rather get a few emails I don’t want, than have my email provider blocking emails arbitrarily.  Our emails are not pornographic, they don’t include pictures of naked people, they don’t include “dirty” words and if any one finds them objectionable, I’d classify those people on the lunatic category.

The solution?  We’ll we are suggesting that if you signed up for our newsletter with an AOL account, please re-signup using another account.  We want to make sure you get the information you’ve requested.  And after all, if you’re not getting our emails, and we’re not getting yours, what else are you not getting, and who else is not getting your emails?

The travel business is tough right now for American tourist and travel businesses, and for our friends south of the border, it’s even tougher. I know a lot of people avoid talking about the subject, but the Mexican tourist business has been hit not only by the recession, but by reported drug wars and the swine flu. Recently I was informed that many resorts in Mexico were shut down for months, and in addition, thousands of workers have been laid off. But what does all of this mean to travelers thinking of going to Mexico?

First, put things in perspective. While Mexico certainly has its crime problems, consider that Mexico has a murder rate of 13 people per 100,000 in population. How does that compare to the United States? Well, it depends upon where you live but let’s look at some examples. In Oakland California the murder rate is 30 people per 100,000, in St. Louis its 40, in Baltimore its 45 and Washington D.C. its 31. Now I haven’t heard of anyone warning tourists they shouldn’t visit our nation’s capital, and while our news media jumps at the opportunity to portray Mexico as dangerous, is it really any more dangerous than a lot of American cities? Also, just like in America, the highest crime rates are in big cities and border towns, not in resort destinations. Honolulu only reports a murder rate of 2 per 100,000 which is the same as reported by Quintana Roo, the province in which Cancun is located.

As for the swine flu, a July 2009 bulletin from the World Health Organization reports that the swine flu has now accounted for 119 deaths in Mexico. It also reported the swine flu has accounted for 170 in the United States and the United States was experiencing the largest reported increase in cases in the whole world. Heck, maybe we should all move to Mexico. Oh, and get this. The US Center for Disease Control reports that in 2006 56,000 people in the US died from influenza and pneumonia. Hang on, 170 dead from swine flu, and 56,000 from regular flu? Yes, there is swine flu in Mexico but it’s also right here in the US and you’re over 300 times more likely to die of regular flu than swine flu anyway. The whole issue would be comical if it weren’t for the harm it is doing to the Mexican resort business. On a recent trip to Cancun I did an informal survey asking people if they knew of anyone who had gotten the swine flu. I couldn’t even find anyone who knew anyone who knew someone who had gotten the swine flu.

The bottom line is that both the drug war problems and the swine flu are completely overblown by the US media and have unfairly prejudiced American travelers against Mexico. In Miami you can find warm weather, great beaches, great resorts, and plenty to do. But you can find the same thing in Cancun, except Quintana Roo, where Cancun is located, has a murder rate of 2 per 100,000, compared to Miami at 20 per 100,000, and Cancun is a heck of a lot cheaper! And with the triple whammy of a recession, swine flu and drug wars, there simply could not be a better time to book a trip to Mexico. The prices are lower than they have been for years, and resorts are clamoring to provide great vacation experiences to American tourists. The prices are down and the service is up!! So do yourself a favor, and do our friends to the south a favor. Get out that credit card and book a Mexican vacation today!! Scott is a former special effects supervisor and digital film compositor for commercial, episodic, and theatrical special effects in Hollywood.
